Introduction
Borstal Boy
A Punk Rock Opera based on the story as told in David Clarke’s book,“Converted on LSD”.
This tells the story of David Clarke known as Clarky, a former criminal graduating from Dover Borstal, in 1968.
After which he had a three year career of undetected crime until arrested, but not by the police.
Clarky tells how his life was changed overnight after an encounter with God who spoke to him during a bad experience on LSD.
The opera tells of his life as a teenager, experiences as a criminal and life in Borstal. It ends with an encouraging note telling how others may find life’s fulfilment, as he has done, through listening to Clarky’s story.
Teenage Kicks
The Undertones
Are teenage dreams so hard to beat?
Every time she walks down the street
Another girl in the neighbourhood
Wish she was mine, she looks so good
I wanna hold you, wanna hold you tight
Get teenage kicks right through the night Alright
I’m gonna call her on the telephone
Invite her over cos I’m all alone
I need excitement and I need it bad
And it’s the best I’ve ever had
David as a teenager got his kicks from dabbling with electronics motor bikes and petty crime. He then meets Sue his first love.
Love Song
The Damned
I’ll be the ticket if you’re my collector
I’ve got the fare if you’re my inspector
I’ll be the luggage, if you’ll be the porter
I’ll be the parcel if you’ll be my sorter
Just for you here’s a love song
Just for you here’s a love song
And it makes me glad to say
It’s been a lovely day
And it’s okay
I’ll be the mail, you’ll be the guard
I’ll be the ink on your season ticket card
I’ll be the rubbish, you’ll be the bin
I’ll be the paint on the sign if you’ll be the tin
David would do any thing for her, he absolutely doted on her.
Strangle Hold On Me
UK Subs
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Gotta do a dance And it goes like this
Yeah, some little girls
got a hold on me She’s only 13
but, oh, so sweet
Got me down on my knees
Got a stranglehold on me
She puts her arms around me like a vice
It’s, oh, so painful but nice
But I can only take once or twice
Got a stranglehold on me
Got a stranglehold on me
Got a stranglehold on me
Got a stranglehold on me
Stranglehold
At this stage Dave was 16 years old and Sue was just 15 (1965)
Sue
Ever Fallen In Love
The Buzzcocks
You spurn my natural emotions
You make me feel I’m dirt And I’m hurt
And if I start a commotion
I run the risk of losing you And that’s worse
Ever fallen in love?
In love with someone
Ever fallen in love? (Love…)
In love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with
I can’t see much of a future
Unless we find out what’s to blame
What a shame
And we won’t be together much longer
Unless we realize that we are the same
You disturb my natural emotions
You make me feel I’m dirt
And I’m hurt
And if I start a commotion
I’ll only end up losing you
And that’s worse
Ever fallen in love with someone
You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with…
Dave had ramped up his petty crimes and Sue became increasingly unhappy.
Did You No Wrong
Sex Pistols
I don’t mind the things that you say
I don’t even mind going out of my way
try and do these things for you
Why should I do it our love is untrue
Well, I did you no wrong
I did you no wrong
Going out of my head
I ain’t seen you off the screen
But those films are my dreams
And I can’t take much more of you
‘Cause the bog is no place to see your face
Oh can’t you see I’m out of my head
Oh can’t you see I’m a little insane
Oh can’t you see going out of my head
Oh can’t you see I’m really dead
Going down, down, out of my head
I did you no wrong
I did you no wrong
I did you no wrong
I did you no wrong
I did you no wrong
Going out of my head
I did you no wrong
I did you no wrong!
Out of my head
Dave could not understand what he had done wrong.
Jilted John
Jilted John
I’ve been going out with a girl, her name is Julie
But last night she said to me,
when we were watching telly
( This is what she said)
She said listen John,
I love you But there’s this bloke, I fancy
I don’t want to two time you,
so it’s the end for you and me
Who’s this bloke I asked her
Goooooordon, she replied
Not THAT puff, I said dismayed
Yes but he’s no puff she cried
(He’s more of a man than you’ll ever be)
Here we go, two three four
I was so upset that I cried, all the way to the chip shop
When I came out there was Gordon, standing at the bus stop
(And guess who was with him?
Yeah, Julie, and they were both laughing at me)
Oh, she is cruel and heartless to pack me for Gordon
Just cos he’s better looking than me
Just cos he’s cool and trendy
But I know he’s a moron,
Gordon is a moron
Gordon is a moron,
Gordon is a moron
Here we go, two three four
Oh she’s a slag and he’s a creep She’s a tart,
he’s very cheap She is a slut, he thinks he’s tough
She is a bitch, he is a puff
Yeah yeah, it’s not fair Yeah yeah, it’s not fair
(I’m so upset)
I’m so upset, I’m so upset,
yeah yeah
(I ought to smash his face in.)
(Yeah, but he’s bigger than me. In’t he?)
(I know, I’ll get my mate Barry to hit him.
He’d flatten him)
(Yeah but Barry’s a mate of Gordon’s in’e?)
(Oh well, I don’t care)
I don’t care, I don’t care, Cause she’s a slag and he’s a creep
she’s a tart,
he’s very cheap
she is a slut,
he thinks he’s tough......
Sue finally had to dump Dave. Dave instead of going to the chip shop drove off into the night on his brothers Lamberetta !

I’m An Upstart
Angelic Upstarts
We don’t need to be clever to learn your lies
We only have to listen, open up our eyes
Try to be honest, get kicked in the face
But if you cheat you’re just a rat in the race
I’m an upstart
Hey whatcha gonna do
I’m an upstart
Listen I’m talking to you
Seek out an identity
You alienate society
Face the facts, why not admit it
How can you be outrageous
when your mother won’t allow it?
Dave goes off the rails and became a ruthless
and selfish full time juvenile. He had no regard for family, friends or the law.
Staring At The Rude Boys
The Ruts
It’s a very small world in the middle of a crowd
the room gets dark when the music gets loud
treble cuts thru’ when the rhythm takes the bite
but there’s no room to move
‘cause the floor is packed tight
A voice shouts loud
‘we’ll never surrender’
a voice in the crowd
‘never surrender’
A hand in the crowds flying propaganda:
‘never surrender, we’ll never surrender’
The skins in the corner are staring at the bar
the rude boys are dancing to some heavy heavy ska
it’s getting so hot people are dripping with sweat
the punks in the corner are speeding like a jet
Staring at the rude boys
staring at the rude boys
dancing with the rude boys
dancing with the rude boys
staring at the rude boys
staring at the rude boys...
A bunch of peers march in on the dm’s
with some standing there saluting the air
they wanna be pirates but the sea is not calm
tattooed crossbows on their arm
A voice shouts loud
‘we’ll never surrender’
a voice in the crowd
‘never surrender’
Another hand fly fly propaganda,
propaganda, propaganda
The lights come alive in a blinding flash
dance floor clears as the mutants clash
everyone leaves when the heavy’s arrive
someone hits the floor, someone takes a dive
Staring at the rude boys
staring at the rude boys
dancing with the rude boys
dancing with the rude boys
staring at the rude boys
staring at the rude boys...
Staring at the rude boys
staring at the rude boys
dancing with the rude boys
dancing with the rude boys
staring at the rude boys
staring at the rude boys...

We’ll never surrender x 8
Dave found solice with the local and district Rude Boys (Mods). His original friends (including his band) had rejected him. This in turn only served to fuel his lawless activities, including ....

After leaving Dover Borstal, in 1968 Dave was ready for anything. He felt untouchable living life to the full, on the rampage of promiscuousness sex , recreation drug taking, more criminality and didn’t even contemplate the consequences.
Nice and Sleazy
Stranglers
We came across the west sea
We didn’t have much idea
of the Kind of climate waiting
We used our hands for guidance
Like the children of a preacher
Like a dry tree seeking water
Or a daughter

Nice ‘n’ sleazy does it
Nice ‘n’ sleazy
Nice ‘n’ sleazy
Does it does it does it every time
Nice ‘n’ sleazy

Nice ‘n’ sleazy does it
An angel came from outside
Had no halo had no father
With a coat of many colours
He spoke of brothers many
Wine and women song a plenty
He began to write a chapter In history
Nice ‘n’ sleazy
Nice ‘n’ sleazy does it
Nice ‘n’ sleazy does it
Nice ‘n’ sleazy does it
Does it every time
Using his new found knowledge from Borstal, Dave the Borstal Graduate, realised that dirty dealings achieved what ever he desired at the time and lived of his reputation.
Pretty Vacant
The Sex Pistols
There’s no point in asking
You’ll get no reply
Oh just remember a don’t decide
I got no reason it’s all too much
You’ll always find us out to lunch
Oh we’re so pretty
Oh so pretty we’re vacant
Oh we’re so pretty
Oh so pretty
A vacant
Don’t ask us to attend
‘cos we’re not all there
Oh don’t pretend ‘cos I don’t care
I don’t believe illusions
‘cos too much is real
So stop your cheap comment
‘cos we know what we feel
Oh we’re so pretty
Oh so pretty we’re vacant
Oh we’re so pretty
Oh so pretty we’re vacant
Ah but now and we don’t care
There’s no point in asking
You’ll get no reply
Oh just remember a don’t decide
I got no reason it’s all too much
You’ll always find me out to lunch
We’re out on lunch
Dave had no care for others and obviously lived life in a selfish way.
Where’s Captain Kirk
Spizzenergi
I was beamed aboard the starship Enterprise
What I felt what I saw was a total surprise
I looked around and wondered can this be
Or is this the start of my insanity
Oh but it’s true
As we went warp factor 2
And I met all of the crew
Where’s Captain Kirk
I went to the bridge and we were tossed about
In the storm of the vortex I was hit with a doubt
I saw in a dream in a memory of mine
Was it you was it me who was in all the time
Spock pulled me through
As we went warp factor 2
And someone I saw I knew
Who’s Captain Kirk
So when I awoke from the dangers of space
I looked and I saw a familiar face
The time warp in space made a change in me
For I was the captain and the captain was me
Yes it’s so true
As we went warp factor 2
The changes I had been through
As Captain Kirk
I’m Captain Kirk
Then Dave had a bad trip on LSD. It was too much for him to hande. His whole world had suddenly collapesed around him. During this trip and as a last resourt Dave called out to Jesus and he was answered.

Should I Stay Or Should I Go ?
The Clash
Oh yeeeeeaaaaah Wooh!
Darling you got
to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
If you say that you are mine
I’ll be here ’til the end of time
So you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
Always tease tease tease
You’re happy when I’m on my knees
One day is fine, next day is black
So if you want me off your back
Well come on and let me know
Should I stay or should I go?
Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
An’ if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know!
This indecision’s bugging me
Esta indecision me molesta
If you don’t want me, set me free
Si no me quieres, librame
Exactly whom I’m supposed to be
Dime que tengo que ser
Don’t you know which clothes even fit me?
¿sabes que ropas me quedan?
Come on and let me know
Me tienes que decir
Should I cool it or should I blow?
¿me debo ir o quedarme?
Split!
Yo me enfrio o lo sufro
Should I stay or should I go now?
yo me enfrio o lo sufro
Should I stay or should I go now?
yo me enfrio o lo sufro
If I go there will be trouble
Si me voy - va a haber peligro
And if I stay it will be double
Si me quedo es doble
So you gotta let me know
Pero me tienes que decir
Should I cool it or should I go?
yo me enfrio o lo sufro
Should I stay or should I go now?
yo me enfrio o lo sufro
If I go there will be trouble
Si me voy - va a haber peligro
And if I stay it will be double
Si me quedo es doble
So you gotta let me know
Pero me tienes que decir
Should I stay or should I go?
Dave had the choice to continue as before or to follow a new path.

Or Mr Very Guilty
Very, very guilty there is no other plea.
Yes very, very guilty looked like three years to me
1 Taken to the court house, by the powers that be.
In answer to the charges, had to make a plea.
Mr very guilty took them by surprise.
Having no defence set forth my demise.
Very, very guilty there is no other plea.
Yes very, very guilty looks like three years for me.
2 Made up my portfolio, listing all my crimes,
and knew with my past history, I was doing time.
Told the court my teenage past, and recognized the bench,
there, was my silver girl a love that made no sense
Tagalog :Very Very Guilty there is no other plea
or Very very guilty looks like three years to me
3 She was now a magistrate , how would all this end.
Once she was my sweetheart, loved her to the end.
The Dear John that she give me , had sent me round the bend,
off into the night I drove, my life was at an end.
Very, very guilty there is no other plea.
Yes very, very guilty looks like three years to me.
4 Far more to my story, and was intent to tell.
Stood before the court that day, told of my trip to hell.
Told them all in detail, about my life of crime
since leaving Dover Borstal, 1969.
Very, very guilty there is no other plea.
Yes very, very guilty looks like three years to me.
